The Valuable 2025 Quarter Errors — Complete Guide
The 2025 American Women Quarters are the final year of a four-year program — and as production ramps up and dies wear through high-volume strikes, minting errors naturally occur. The five varieties below are the most actively collected and traded. Use a 10× loupe to examine the key diagnostics on each one. Error values depend heavily on the degree of the mistake and the coin's overall grade: a dramatic, clearly visible error on an uncirculated coin is worth far more than the same error on a heavily worn piece.
Doubled Die Error (DDO / DDR)
A doubled die error forms during the die-making process, not on the coin press. When the hub that impresses the design onto a working die shifts slightly between impressions, the die itself receives a doubled image. Every coin subsequently struck from that die carries the same doubling — making it a true die variety, not random damage.
On 2025 American Women Quarters, examine the obverse lettering — IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date 2025 — most carefully. Reverse doubled dies appear on the honoree's name, the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR. The doubling shows as a slight ghosting or shelf effect beside each affected letter when viewed under a 10× loupe. Eye-visible doubling (separation clear without magnification) is far more valuable than minor hub doubling.
As the final year of the American Women Quarters program, any confirmed 2025 doubled die variety carries extra collector excitement. Comparable doubled die quarters from the 2024 series (Dr. Mary Edwards Walker) have sold in the $75–$100 range for clearly visible examples. Minor doubling adds $10–$30; the most dramatic specimens with strong separation on key devices command $100 or more, particularly on the scarcer Stacey Park Milbern and Dr. Vera Rubin designs.
Missing Clad Layer Error
Modern clad quarters are a sandwich: a pure copper core bonded to outer layers of 75% copper / 25% nickel alloy. Occasionally during planchet preparation, one of those outer cupronickel layers fails to bond correctly or separates before striking. The result is a planchet missing one clad face — and when struck, the coin's affected side shows the exposed copper core rather than the expected silver-gray surface.
The diagnostic is unmistakable even to the naked eye: one face of the coin appears copper-orange or rose-colored while the other retains the standard clad appearance. The affected face also strikes slightly softer because the copper core is more malleable, sometimes leaving design details marginally shallower on that side. Weight may be slightly below the standard 5.67 grams, which can be confirmed with a precise jeweler's scale.
Missing clad layer errors rank among the most visually dramatic modern mint errors and consistently attract competitive bidding. Coins missing the obverse clad layer are generally considered more desirable than reverse examples because Washington's portrait on the copper face is the focal point. Values range from $50 for lesser examples to over $200 for high-grade pieces with a dramatic, fully missing clad layer. The Dr. Vera Rubin and Stacey Park Milbern designs, with their lower total mintages, are particularly prized in this error category.
"IN COD WE TRUST" Grease-Filled Die Error
The grease-filled die error — nicknamed the "cod fish quarter" — is one of the most talked-about errors in the entire American Women Quarters program. It happens when accumulated grease, grime, or metallic debris clogs the recessed letter cavities of the working die. When the die strikes a planchet, metal flows into the die's open spaces but cannot enter the grease-packed cavities, leaving those letters partially or completely absent from the struck coin.
On 2025 quarters, the error most dramatically appears in the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. When the G and O in GOD fail to form, the motto reads IN COD WE TRUST — a phrase instantly memorable and highly shareable, which has made this error especially popular with casual collectors and social media audiences far beyond the traditional numismatic community. Partial fill (one letter weakened) is more common than a complete fill of both letters.
The 2023 American Women Quarters series introduced this error to wider attention when similar "IN COD WE TRUST" coins sold online for several hundred dollars. Comparable 2023 examples have reportedly fetched up to $900 in online sales. The 2025 series, being the final year of the program, adds collectibility. A completely absent G and O on an uncirculated example of a lower-mintage design such as Dr. Vera Rubin or Stacey Park Milbern represents the most desirable configuration.
Off-Center Strike Error
An off-center strike occurs when a planchet is not properly centered between the dies at the moment of striking. As the dies close, the design impresses only onto the portion of the planchet beneath the die faces, leaving the remaining metal as a blank, featureless crescent. The greater the misalignment, the larger the blank crescent — and typically the higher the collector value.
The key visual clues are a blank curved area on the coin (where no design was struck) alongside a normal or partially normal design on the opposite side. On a 2025 quarter, the design portion will show Washington's portrait, date, and motto compressed toward one side of the coin. The rim will be absent on the blank side. Coins that are 5% or less off-center carry minimal premium; those in the 40–60% range with the date and mint mark still fully visible are the most desirable to error collectors.
Value scales steeply with the percentage of off-center shift and the preservation of the date. A modest 3–5% off-center adds $25–$30. A dramatic 40–60% off-center example showing the full date and mint mark commands $250–$300 or more, particularly on lower-mintage designs. The Dr. Vera Rubin design (total mintage of approximately 118.8 million — lowest of any 2025 design) is especially collectible when found with major off-center errors.
Die Cud Error
A die cud is the most dramatic type of die break error. It forms when a section of the metal die fractures and breaks away along the rim, creating a void in the die. During subsequent strikes, metal flows into this void and creates a raised, blob-like mass along the coin's edge — a "cud" — that obliterates whatever design element originally occupied that rim location. The cud is always raised, always at or near the rim, and always replaces a normal design feature with featureless metal.
On 2025 American Women Quarters, cuds can appear on either the obverse or reverse, anywhere along the rim. A cud obliterating part of the date, the word LIBERTY, or a key element of the honoree's portrait on the reverse is particularly notable. The size of the cud matters: small cuds covering only a few millimeters are relatively common and carry modest premiums, while large cuds extending 5mm or more into the design field are genuinely uncommon and command significant collector interest.
Die cud errors are immediately visible without magnification — the raised blob stands out against the normal coin surface with no ambiguity. They are rarer than simple die cracks and represent an advanced stage of die deterioration, meaning fewer coins were struck from that broken die state before the die was pulled from service. Values run $20–$50 for small cuds and $100–$200 or more for large, dramatic examples. Cuds on lower-mintage designs like Dr. Vera Rubin or Stacey Park Milbern carry the strongest collector premiums within the 2025 series.

How to Grade Your 2025 Quarter
Grading determines value more than any other single factor on a 2025 quarter. Here's how professionals assess condition.
🟤 Worn (G–F, VF)
Washington's cheekbone and the high points of his hair are flat and dull. Reverse design high points show loss of detail. Original luster is entirely gone. The coin has clearly been used in daily commerce. Value: face value (25¢) in most cases.
🟡 Circulated (EF–AU50-58)
Light wear on cheekbone and hair above the ear; partial luster still visible in protected areas like the lettering. The reverse honoree's portrait retains most detail. AU-58 coins often look deceptively uncirculated but have just a trace of flat wear on the very highest design points.
🟢 Uncirculated (MS60–65)
No wear at all — the cartwheel luster sweeps across the full surface when tilted under light. Bag marks (small contact marks from mint bags) are acceptable. MS63 has several marks; MS65 ("Gem") shows only a few minor ones. Values climb from $4 to $11 depending on grade.
💎 Gem (MS66–MS70)
Above-average strike quality with no more than 2–3 minor contact marks. Fully original cartwheel luster. MS66 examples hit $10–$15+; MS67 and above are conditionally rare (most coins bag-mark below this) and can command significantly higher prices, especially the lower-mintage designs.
